CCF’s Community Q&A Episode 3 – Diversity In Play w/ Grand Rapids Children’s Museum.
In August, Cascade Community Foundation sparked a new conversation for families across Ada, Cascade and Forest Hills, helping them to gain exposure to cultures and diversity they otherwise may ignore – intentionally or otherwise. The often avoided topic of diversity in the predominantly white suburbs around Grand Rapids has become a magnet for positive dialogue, with new episodes spawning from the highly popular Race In The Suburbs, a panel discussion that has lended opportunity to gain a better understanding of what it’s like to be a person of color in this community.
“The feedback from our first episode was outstanding, but what we didn’t expect was the profound interest in unpacking more and more each month,” said Justin Swan, Cascade Community Foundation’s CEO. “What began out of sheer will power, bravery and a little faith has produced an endless amount of sub-topics that solve one problem – lack of understanding.”
In the latest episode, Swan chats with Ada, Michigan’s Natalie Hall and Maggie Lancaster from Grand Rapids Children’s Museum. The informal dialogue is sure to spark ideas, as they examine the what and why behind GRCM’s exhibits, and how the organization fuses culture into everything they do. Underwritten by United Bank, the duo confidently share personal stories, and leverage the eclectit melting pot of culture, socio-economic range and expression of downtown Grand Rapids to encourage parents to “just come down here” as a means to introduce children to diversity.
