The Cascade Community Foundation is pleased to announce that we have chosen Cynthia Kay Afendoulis to receive the 2014 Claude and Marion Robinson Community Leadership Award.
The Community Leadership Award is given to a person who demonstrates by example a commitment to improving the community and the lives of their neighbors. Each year the selection committee chooses an award winner that embodies the true meaning of good citizenship. We hope that others will hear the story of Cynthia Kay Afendoulis and be inspired to create change and good in their own communities, working together to make our corner of the world the best place to live, work and play.
When researching the background for CK’s profile it became obvious that we at the Cascade Community Foundation didn’t nominate her for her leadership in media production or corporate communications. Nor did we nominate her for her dynamic and creative professionalism. She is all these things, but she is so much more. A caring and supportive member of our community, Cynthia is always the first one to step up to the plate when help is needed. She is the self-appointed welcome wagon to new neighbors, the connector of professionals and a caring shoulder to lean on. When the Cascade Community Foundation asked her to step in as a board member, she not only lent us her time and diplomacy as a valued board member, she lent her talents as a media producer helping us put together every event and concert that we held, and her treasure both out of her own pocket and making connections between her contacts and ours.
She found time for all that and to be an established and respected businesswoman; a well-known leader in media production and corporate communications. As a professional broadcaster, Cynthia anchored, produced, directed and hosted specialty programming to investigative reporting, documentaries and features. After her award winning 13-year career in broadcasting, Cynthia formed Cynthia Kay & Company. She has been honored with awards from United Press International, and the Associated Press. In addition she has received over 30 broadcast awards including several Telly awards. She has been listed among the top 50 most influential women in West Michigan numerous times and in 2005 was awarded the Top Woman Owned Business in her category and named Small Business of the Year. In June she was presented with the Small Business Association of Michigan Advocate of the Year Award.
Today she is the Chair of the Small Business Association of Michigan’s PAC and serves on the Executive Board of the National Small Business Association. She recently published a book entitled Small Business for Big Thinkers. Her clients include Fortune 500 companies, small businesses and nonprofits such as the Grand Rapids Public Museum, Siemens Industry, Wiley Publishing Huntington Bank and Herman Miller to name a few. Congratulations Cynthia Kay Afendoulis. We are proud to name you the 2014 Claude and Marion Robinson Community Leadership Award Winner.
